Hi guys got a couple of questions if you don't mind and can helpSmile

Me and the family are coming over August 2nd to 9th staying in a villa(17 of us altogther) for a holiday.

Is there anything happening around that time?
Also is there a big supermarket near by where we can stop off and stock up for the week are wre we talking about going further afield like Girona?
When i say big i mean a bigger one like a Carrefour or something similar to tesco'sWink

And while i'm at it the villa owner told me we wouldn't need to hire a portable air con at that time as there is a breeze.Does this sound right as even back home over here during the summer it can be too warm of a night time and would be nice to have air con so i was thinking it would be worse over there?

I think that's about it for now if i think of anything esle to ask i'll let you knowWink

Thanks
Darren

Not that I know of. It's the height of the holiday period so something might be happening, like the circus coming to town, but I don't know of anything in particular. The new website (when it's finally finished) will have stuff like that in it so look on Empuriabrava Online nearer the time.

There are lots of supermarkets in and around the town and there's even a big Carrefour on the way into Figueres (about 15 mins from Empuriabrava). Auchen, a hypermarket just outside of Perpignan in France is well worth a visit.

And while i'm at it the villa owner told me we wouldn't need to hire a portable air con at that time as there is a breeze.Does this sound right as even back home over here during the summer it can be too warm of a night time and would be nice to have air con so i was thinking it would be worse over there?

You need A/C! There can be a breeze and if you are able to get a breeze through the house it can be very pleasant. However, there isn't always a breeze and during the evening/night you don't want doors and windows open (security and mosquitoes) so an A/C is a must. It does get hot here!

Sure - glad to help if I can. Have a good holiday.

Thanks
Darren

Thanks for all these replies, Mike, which I also wanted to ask. This means that, in our case where we are considering a purchase it would be worthwhile looking at houses which have the AC installed. Then, what about heating in winter? I have seen that some houses have electric radiators only, but we guess they are secondary residences only. Any ideas? I'm still in New York until Wednesday... so take your time.

If you intend to live in Empuriabrava over the winter/spring then you will need heating. It gets very cold here!

The type of heating that you get depends very much on what is available/possible. We can't install central heating in our house because there isn't room for the boiler/tank and electric radiators weren't an option.

When we bought our house we had to install A/C and think about heating at the same time so we went for the reversible A/C option. Perhaps not the cheapest form of heating (although with the oil prices today maybe it was) but it is very consistent. We have found that running A/C in the summer and the heating in the winter means that our electricity bill is pretty much the same throughout the year: Except for those four wonderful weeks when we need neither Smile

Thank you for the details, Mike. My husband is a retired architect, so it will be easy for him to work out what we need; however, it is important to know that heating is a must during winter. I agree with you that A/C may not be a bad idea with current oil prices. Thanks again,

The nearest McDs is in Figueres (about 15/20 minutes drive) and I've never seen a KFC.

Hi! Perhaps the reason for not having many of the fast food shops you find in other places may be the fact that this is Ferran Adria and "El Bulli" territory, the best chef and restaurant in the world. For your information, have a look at:

http://www.elbulli.com/menu.php?lang=en

They have started their own fast food line, including some fabulour hamburgers under the trade name of "Fast Good", you can see some details in the same site, unfortunately most of that part of the text is in Spanish as they are still developing franchises.
Nevertheless, try to eat local hamburgers and the famous "tapas" which most foreigners thoroughly enjoy. I am sure that you will find places catering for your needs. Enjoy your stay!
